| Oscar N Johnson, Jr practices
a full range of corporate and commercial law, specialising
in commercial and civil litigation, merchant shipping
and admiralty law, insurance, international finance
and employment law. He has appeared as Junior Counsel
in a number of important international commercial
cases in The Bahamas including Grupo Torras and
was Counsel in the Bahamian proceedings involving
Slim America, Inc.; Premium Sales Corporation; Globe-X
Canadiana and Globe-X Management; Americas International
Bank (In Liquidation); Debtworks, Inc, and Suisse
Security Bank & Trust.
Oscar attended John Abbott College, Ste Anne
de Bellevue, Quebec, where he obtained the Diplome
d’Etude Collegialle. He went on to study
History and Political Science at McGill University,
Montreal, Quebec, Canada, graduating with a Bachelor
of Arts degree in 1982. In 1984 he obtained an
LL.B (Hons) from the University of London School
of Oriental and African Studies in England. In
July 1985 Oscar was called to the Bar of England
and Wales and made an Utter Barrister as a member
of the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn.
In August, he joined Higgs & Johnson as an
Associate. The following month, he was called
to the Bahamas Bar. He was made a Partner at Higgs
& Johnson in 1992.
Mr. Johnson has authored Bahamas-specific chapters
in International Professional Practice and The
Use of Videoconferencing in The Bahamas. He has
served as a member of The Bridge Authority, St
Andrew’s School Board of Directors, the
Disciplinary Tribunal, the Arbitration Tribunals,
and as advisor to the Nassau Tourism & Development
Board. He is a member of the Bahamas Bar Association
Ethics Committee.
